Some states have their own free online tax prep program so
you can use Taxact for federal and the free state program.

The first thing that happens is it asks for a credit card
number to finish the install.

For what it's worth, I have read in alt.comp.freeware that
they do indeed try to charge you when you install.

Try TaxAct. You can get a free
Standard-TaxAct (Fed only, states are $10 each) at

http://www.taxact.com/

You don't need the state version to do the Fed 1040.

I've found that once you have the Fed 1040 done, generally
the state is easy to do by hand if you don't want to spend
the $10 for the state version. IMO however it is well worth
the $10 for the convenience.

There is an unofficial support group for TaxAct at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TaxACTors/

which is very helpful.

Default Copy of TaxCut in PC Mag

(Hope this isn't against the rules; I posted this question
in an old thread recently; maybe no one saw it there, so
I'll reask anew. If this isn't kosher for the group, you
can delete me and we'll never be the wiser!)

A CD for TaxCut is enclosed in this month's issue of PC
Magazine. Has anyone seen if they attempt to charge you for
it when you install it? I for one have been using TT for a
number of years. But what the heck, if they give me TC for
nothing, I owe it to myself to go thru the motions to see if
indeed it is any 'better' after I do my usual thing with TT.

(Reason I ask is I don't like installing software that I'll
immediately end up de-installing. That always leaves traces
of DLLs, registry entries, and such around.)
