You report it for 2005. It's the trade date that counts,
not the settlement date. The broker will send you a 1099-B
showing the sale on Dec. 28.

You use the trade date, not the settlement date.

Default Sold Stock - What year to claim loss

On 28-Dec-05 I sold some Avaya stock at a loss. The settlement
date is 3-Jan-06. Can I claim this sell and loss for Tax Year
2005? Or do I have to wait for TY 2006?
