Your profit on the savings bonds is not capital gain, it's
interest. You have to report it on Schedule B.

Default Savings Bonds Gains in Schedule D?

We cashed in a number of savings bonds this year resulting
in a Gain of about $6000. Can I put that on Schedule D to
balance it against some long term Mutual Fund losses?
