Earlier this year, my wife cashed in some savings bonds we had
received years ago which resulted in a significant taxable chunk
of interest. If I contribute to a 529 plan for the kids college,
can I attribute those contributions to the interest and avoid
some of the taxable gain?

If so, do I have to do so before 1 Jan or is there a grace period
up to 15 April like there is with IRAs.
