I saw a post somewhere else where someone said that when he
installed the free TaxCut CD it asked for a credit card.
Yours from PC Magazine didn't? You didn't have to pay
anything?

I used the "free" tax cut software and it neither charged me
when I installed the software nor required me to enter
Credit Card number "for future purposes"

The sites we use, public libraries, senior centers, etc.
can't provide us with a dedicated telephone line during our
tax prep sessions.

That's nice to know; but I'm puzzled: did you do it out of
curiosity alone? I ask because the AARP program volunteers
use TaxWise for e-file.

I installed the free-bee Tax Cut Standard CD from PC
Computer Magazine on my two computers and it seems to be
working OK. I've used on several practice returns (I'm a tax
volunteer for AARP.)

Yesterday, I wa able to download updates for the program. So
far so good.

A CD for TaxCut is enclosed in this month's issue of PC
Magazine. Has anyone seen if they attempt to charge you for
it when you install it? I for one have been using TT for a
number of years. But what the heck, if they give me TC for
nothing, I owe it to myself to go thru the motions to see if
indeed it is any 'better' after I do my usual thing with TT.

I have also received this disk. On the front it says
"Taxcut 2005 FREE federal software". On the back in small
print it says you can do your federal return for free and
you can do your state return for just $24.95. Hard to
imagine H&R Block is going to give you free software to do
your federal return hoping they will sell you the state.
Most State returns are very simple. I'm thinking you MUST
pruchase the state portion for $24.95 to do your federal for
free. I have not installed this software and I am leaving
the shrink wrap on the package for add protection ;-)

I did, but I threw it away. I switched from TC to Tax Act
three years ago.

Bet they want a credit card to "activate" it, right? Are
you sure it's "free"? Otherwise, if it's truly free, it
might be interesting just to try it , assuming you believe
it to be legit and not full of trojan horses, viruses,
spyware, and the like! (I am so paranoid, not sure I'd pop
a CD in my computer and click 'RUN' on an unsolicited piece
of software despite what the label looks like!)

H&R Block (which publishes TaxCut) sent it as a marketing
tactic. It's not free. If you install it, it will ask you
for a credit card to pay for it. If you look carefully at
the package, it probably says that somewhere, most likely in
small print.

See this recent thread in misc.legal for someone else who
claims this happened to them (unless that someone is you):

Both basic TaxCut and TurboTax are widely available "free".
Several of my banks and brokers offer free web versions.

It's the add-on like e-filing, printing, state forms,
planning analysis, etc they charge for.

Default Free copy of Taxcut

Yesterday, out of the blue, I received a copy of Taxcut in
the mail. I did not order, and not sure who sent it.
Anyone else have this happen to them?

Thanks
