Many years ago (I haven't checked recently), books were in
that category (for cross-country moves, anyway).

The items mentioned above are directly related to cost of
the moving your household goods and are therefore
deductible. You should review IRS Publication 521
(downloadable from IRS site) as it gives a good
plain-English discussion of moving expenses, what's
deductible, what's not and how to file.

They sound like deductible costs of moving your household
goods to me.

You may have already checked costs, but I'm having trouble
thinking of household items that would add more weight
charge to the van than the amount of postage to mail them.

Default Deductible moving expenses?

I'm moving 150 miles for a new job so I know I can deduct at
least some of my moving expenses. But I have a couple of
questions. Firstly can I deduct the cost of buying boxes,
tape, etc? Secondly if I mail some of my belongings to my
new address rather than putting them on the moving van can I
deduct the shipping cost?

Thanks
