I don't know what FIT is (FICA? then you better pay, certainly
if you ever want to be a US citizen)

NY SDI is a premium like workman's compensation/unemployment
tax, a state tax, and you've got to pay it.

Medical insurance? If so, better have it just in case

I filed for some 6 years ('69-'75) as a J1 (don't ask, it
was legal, and I'm now a US citizen), and all the time I
filed a joint return. Then, my stipend was tax-exempt for
the Feds, putting us below the "poor" limit for WIC
subsidies. Feds and Taxachusetts accepted everything.

If your employer is foreign, you will not pay any foreign
taxes. If it is a US employer, however, you are worse off
than if you were a resident for at least part of the year
(defined as the IRC defines it, not as INS does). If
married you cannot file joint, putting you in the worse
status of the code. You cannot take your children as
dependents and you cannot take the standard deduction. You
are limited to business type deductions (incuding state
taxes). That can make for some pretty high taxes.

I cannot speak for New York as I know very little about
their taxes.

Default J1 visa status tax return

Hi, I'm an exchange PhD-student in New York, with J1-visa
status. Last year I received as a tax return approximately
the half amount of the money I payed as taxes. I think that
I as an exchange student with current status in the US could
receive back the whole amount of my taxes. Is this right and
what I have to do? The taxes I pay now are:

- FIT
- (NY) SDI
- (NY) SIT
- (Queens) CITY
- EMPIRE MED PRET
