I will send in a paper return even if the cost of using a
third-party filing services is only $5!

It is the principle, not the cost. The government should not
be making taxpayers pay money to any non-government (or even
government) organization in order to file required forms.
(Yes, I know I must pay postage to mail in my return.)

As you state, e-filing saves the government money, so there
is no reason why taxpayers should have to pay more to use
e-file.

IRS newswire 126 says,
"The Free File Alliance members are a consortium of tax
software manufacturers that set their own criteria for
taxpayer eligibility for free use of their software. The
agreement calls for services to be provided to 70 percent of
the nation's taxpayers. Taxpayers access Free File through
IRS.gov. Alliance members and their services will be
available beginning in January 2006 on the IRS Web site."

Are you referring to the costs incurred by the IRS? I've
never seen amounts nearly that high. I believe the last time
the GAO commented on this, they couldn't be convinced that
it cost the IRS more than $3 - $4 to process a paper return.

Default "free e-filing" more restricted?

CBS Marketwatch said the IRS is restricting free efiling to
incomes under $50K next year. This year practically anyone
could do this, given they didnt use one of the more obscure
forms not yet computerized.

The article explains this restriction was re-imposed after
complaints from the tax industry.

I dont understand this. Scanning/keyboard the average
taxpayers return cost something like $53, not to mention
having to deal with increased error. I'm one of those who
if they can save the $40 efiling fee by mailing in the
paper, will mail in the paper.
