It is not a requirement for filing an income tax return. The IRS procedure is simply to line through the incorrect number on the W2 and write in the correct number above it. Include W2 of course with the tax return being filed. | This is also important for Social Security benefits, included the young-age ones such as disability and supplemental income. When you are early in your career each qualifying quarter is significant. Lower income contributions are counted at 90% replacement while high income contributions only 15%. A bad SS number means no credit. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2005) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

The simplest thing would be for her to fill out Form 4852> for a short time for her mom's boyfriend (they have since > brokeup). The IRS says that the problem is that he mistyped > her ssn on her w2. Here's a link: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4852.pdf The Form 4852 acts as a substitute W-2 form when there is an error on a W-2 and the employer refuses to correct the W-2. --Chris Ballard << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2005) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

| My neice is still waiting on her 2004 refund. She worked for a short time for her mom's boyfriend (they have since brokeup). The IRS says that the problem is that he mistyped her ssn on her w2. The IRS say he needs to issue a corrected w2. But his only answer to her is to goto hell. Any suggestions on what options she has?
