Yes, the IRS issues a Letter of Determination.

You can ask the organization for the IRS letter, or you can check IRS
Publication 78, searchable online at http://apps.irs.gov/app/pub78

You may search for exempt organizations by going to the IRS
website and typing 78 in the 'search for' box and selecting
'forms and publications'. Publication 78 is an online search
for charities. It's a very interesting and useful pub.

Happy searching.

If you want know which organization are eligible to receive
charitable contributions see the online version of IRS Pub 78:
http://www.irs.gov/charities/article...=96136,00.html

Updates to Pub 78 are at:
http://www.irs.gov/charities/article...=96291,00.html

You can also search for nonprofits at:
http://www.guidestar.org/index.jsp
You will need to register to gain access to the forms 990.

Yes.

Yes, they can ask, but you can also check the IRS Pub 78 to
see if they are listed (new groups may not be listed yet).
http://www.irs.gov/charities/article...=96136,00.html

Also check with organizations like Guidestar
http://www.guidestar.org/using/nonprofits.jsp for other details

The organization gets a "determination letter" from the IRS.
You could ask the organization to send you a copy of the
letter. Alan Kalman has given you links to the IRS web site
and another site where you can check.

Our Society just received 501(c)(3) status (retroactive till
1960-odd). We received a letter stating so, and specifying
the previously (somehow) issued TIN as "valid".

Sorry, I have the documentation at work, since the Society
is a non-profit educational society for
hematologists/oncologists in the NY metro area.

I can be contacted at bloodclub at verizon dot net (I
think).

The IRS sends you a letter saying that your organization has
qualified under section 501(c)(3). I think they also
specify that it qualifies under section 509, which is
generally another requirement you would want it to satisfy.

Yes, the IRS issues a dated Determination Letter which
states The IRS has determined .....

You can always ask the 501(c)(3) NPO for a copy of the IRS
Determination Letter.

And the exact legal name of the organization is listed in
IRS Publication 78, and avaliable for verification from the
www.irs.gov website and then clicking on charities and
nonprofits on te left of that page.

Also see

If the determnation letter was sent only very recently the
NPO might not yet show up in Pub 78, in which case, look for
it in the Pub 78 supplement. And if it was granted really
really recently it might not yet be in the supplement, so
the determination letter is your only verification.

The organization will receive a "determination letter" from
the IRS. If you ask an organization for a copy of their
determination letter, they should provide it to you.

You can also check to see whether an organization is listed
as tax exempt on the IRS website, using this link:

http://www.irs.gov/charities/article...=96136,00.html

Not all charities that are tax exempt are listed in the IRS
online database, however.

Another place you can check is www.guidestar.org

This is a terrific resource that will let you know whether
an organization is exempt under 501(c)(3) or under another
code section and whether contributions to the organization
are deductible. If the organization is required to file a
tax return, you can also download a copy of the return.

If that status is requested (by the organization) from the
IRS, they will get a letter. Ask to see the letter.

Default 501(c)(3) status granted

When 501(c)(3) status granted is granted to an organization, is any
sort of certificate or letter issued?

What I'm wondering is if a person wants to check if an organization
has been granted 501(c)(3) status, what can they ask to see? Or is
there some place on www.irs.gov to check?
