My memory concurs with this: If you miss your renewal date,
you are implicitly placed into the "inactive status" for one
renewal cycle before you are dropped. I believe that the
side effect of this is that you are NOT allowed to practice
until you're returned to active status by having sent in
certification that you have met the continuing education
requirements (and receiving a new card back).

Now, looking at (the older copy of the rules - from 1986),
it appears that my memory is correct. See section 10.6. I
don't think this changed with the recent revision - I don't
have a current copy.

Ah yes , I see that now. Well, the Service did make the
announcement, but I don't recall the date. But I do
remember it was later than they anticipated. Those in that
cycle were sent the necessary renewal paperwork. IRS had no
sooner taken care of that first cycle, when they had to gear
up again and send out paperwork to us in the second batch.

But the first table (0,1,2,3) doesn't have a renewal date.
It just says "The Service will announce the date for renewal
by June 1, 2004." I think that's what the OP was referring
to when he said it doesn't have all the renewal dates.

But the first table (0,1,2,3) doesn't have a renewal date.
It just says "The Service will announce the date for renewal
by June 1, 2004." I think that's what the OP was referring
to when he said it doesn't have all the renewal dates.

I just looked at that page and it is indeed complete. There
are three tables; first for those whose ssn end in 0,1,2,3;
then for people like me, with ssn ending in either a 4,5, or
6, and last table for those 7,8,9.

Now I'm in the middle bunch, so IRS sent me the renewal form
last December and I sent them the 85$ or so, filled out the
form, and presto, no problem.

Seems to me with an expiry date of 03/05, you should have
already renewed. Call the OPR and ask them.

I don't think so. there are provisions for being placed in
a hiatus, then renewing later, but I'm not familiar with the
details. I've been an EA continuously since 1975 and never
had a lapse. A lapse of memory sometimes, perhaps though.

Well, do you use the NAEA web page? or the NAEA webboard?
If not, you're missing out on a lot, believe me. Either
they have your address incorrectly, or your local post
office has a problem; the latter I suspect since it sounds
like you may not have gotten renewal info from IRS in time.
You reckon?

And do you get the NAEA weekly Alert via email? If not, be
sure to sign up for it. Late breaking news delivered to
your computer.

I'm reminded of one of our state members, whose email
address I can't get. NAEA has it at AOL.com; he says it's
at AOL.com, but when I send out the bi-monthly state society
newsletter, it always comes back.

Communications is the key. Just as we communciate with
clients in a timely manner, we have to communicate with each
other.

Default EA Question

I noticed today my EA Card said expiration date March 05. I
never received anything from the IRS regarding renewal. So
I went to the website and see that they had all sorts of
changes and were supposed to mail people new cards in 2004
showing their new expiration dates. I know there are a lot
of practicing EAs here. I have just two questions:

1. For renewal, do I simply fill out Form 8554?
2. Where can I find updated renewal periods for all the
SSNs? The below doesn't have all of them.

http://www.irs.gov/taxpros/agents/ar...117478,00.html

I guess I have a #3 too. What if I miss my renewal period.
Do I have to take the test again?

Thanks for your help.

PS: Also has anyone been disappointed in joining the NAEA?
I joined mostly to get that great EA Journal every two
months, but I can't tell you how many of those the didn't
mail to me. I think my renewal for that is coming up soon,
but don't think I'll re-join.
