California, however, if you move across the border no longer live in California, you may become a nonresident of California. In that case, you would owe taxes to California only on income from California sources. As long as your only employment is in Mexico, and you do not own property or have other income sources in California, you would have no state income tax liability. Caveat: You should check to be sure that failure to file tax returns as a California resident will not jeopardize your U.S. immigration status. That's a federal question, though; California has nothing to say about it.
