Now I'm confused. Is this a maximum of 60 (or 65) or a
minimum of 60 (or 65). I tried to look in the Guidelines,
but none of the links open in Mozilla 1.7.5

Our esteemed moderator set the newsgroup standard to 65 some
time ago. His post was the first time I had seen 60.

Esteemed Moderator:
You're correct, Alan. I set it at 65 9+ years ago.
But I wrote the software at 60 and then put 60 in the
Guidelines. Not a problem to change.

A fairly new group called uk.legal.moderated has a very high
volume, though they have (I think) six moderators, which
lightens the load considerably. In addition they have a
whitelist of people whose posts they have determined they can
allow automatically, which lightens the load even more.

Stu

Moderator: We can discuss via mail.

I thought the standard was 65 characters per line.

Well, if you'd take the tip of some other moderated
newsgroups and post once a week, there'd be a heck of a lot
fewer posts to go through - though the amount of spam would
be the same.

Batch processed? Does that mean into the dustbin?

Stu

Nobody handles the daily volume I handle. But I have
written software that makes it easier.

Batch processed means they go through the software.

Is that last sentence a euphemism for being put
in the "burn before read" file?

In the beginning, I posted every entry by hand. This was
not difficult because nine years ago a big day was 30
entries. Well we are now in off season and a big day is
40 entries. So I will hand post everything that eyeballs
close to 60 characters per line. Everything else gets
batch processed.
