Gainskeeper is an excellent product that seems to handle
most wash sales - excluding puts, calls, etc - correctly.
It is an online product from CCH. See
http://www.gainskeeper.com.

It also imports from several brokerage houses and exports
to several tax programs.

I am not associated with CCH other than as a customer.

Thanks Wayne for the suggestion. I am just now trying to lay
this project out in Excel. Have you seen a pre-configured
Excel layout?

Thanks, Keith

I am not a user of MS Money but I have personally used
Quicken for years and it handles this very well. It is
almost a certainty that MS Money, one of Quicken's chief
competitor's does just as good a job. You will not find
anything simpler or easier to use than these programs.

Put *Schedule D-1*, or *Schedule D calculator*, or *Wash
Sale calculator* into any search engine and you'll get
plently of ideas. You could construct your own simple
spreadsheet for free that is adequate for what you are doing
if you do the special stuff you want manually. Or you can
pay for a program to also have your lots split, wash sales
automatically adjusted, trades closed autmatically on a FIFO
or other basis, etc.

I can't speak for Money, but Intuit's Quicken keeps track of
your cost basis on a per share by date basis.

Do you have access to Excel? There are Excel workbooks
available that perform in the way you are referring.

Default Software needed for tracking stock sales

Is there a software program that can be used for tax
purposes that will track your stock sales? I need at tax
time a report that shows how many shares have been sold (for
capital gains) and at what basis cost those shares were
bought at.

At the same time I need to account for how many of those
shares came from a specific buy in the past, so that the
next year at tax time I don't "double account" for them when
I have sold more. The software would have to deduct for
whatever sold shares were accounted for in a given tax year,
giving you the remainder left. Stock splits would also have
to be accounted for.

I am currently using MS Money and have not figured out how
to make that program do the deducting thing. TIA, Keith
