Also be aware that credit reporting agencies are not efficient at updating their records for satisfactions. About 60 days after you pay off the IRS, check your credit reports to make sure that the liens are shown as satisfied. If they're not, you'll probably need to get copies of the releases from the recording offices and provide them to the credit reporters. -- Phil Marti Clarksburg, MD << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2005) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

If you go to the IRS Service Center in person, get them to issue something in writing, right then, stating that the lien was satisfied. Otherwise, it may take several months, a combination of the IRS taking some time to send something to the county, and the county taking some time to show the lien as being satisfied. When you pay it off, tell the IRS what you are planning to do, and ask what they can do to help you out. -- Paul A. | The IRS has two tax liens against me for back taxes, and I've been on a payment plan with them for a while. I'm about to receive a bonus at work and am going to use it to pay off the liens. After I write the check to the IRS will they automatically release the liens, or do I have to take some further action to ensure that happens? I want to apply for a mortgage soon, and clearly I can't qualify until the tax liens are history.
