OR, we don't know, maybe he had already paid the 4000$, but then they figured it should have been a refund of 1000, so they refunded the 5000$. I dunno. First, *do not cash or deposit* the check. I would write thework VOID across the face of it. Then make a copy of it for your records. Next, contact your local IRS office and explain the situation. Follow their directions. Don't get upset. It's not an unusual cituation. By not cashing the check, you will not be charged interest on their mistake. -- To reply to me directly, remove the CLUTTER from my email address. << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2005) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

File Form 1040-X, an ammended return to correct the mistake.Along with return, return the refund and pay your liability. File the return before they catch up with your mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. Correct your mistake and everything will be fine. Well, you could fuss and fret about it or you could callthem and ask, "Whazzup?" -- Phil Marti Clarksburg, MD << ================================================== ===== > << The foregoing is intended for educational purposes only > << and does NOT constitute legal OR professional advice. > << > << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org. > << Copyright (2005) - All rights reserved. > << ================================================== ===== > |

Don't be. Any time an error is made, IRS will (at lastmost all the time if they catch it) correct it. Plus they will send you an explanatory letter telling you why. What did the letter say? And was their assessment of the error correct? If so, rest assured and cash the check. Wait a minute; you thought you OWED 4,000$ and they refunded 5000$????? What DID the letter say as to the cause?
