You will need to discuss this with the agency in your state
that handles UI claims. The typical process requires that
you submit continuation claim forms on a timely basis
(weekly, biweekly, etc.). These claim forms require that you
identify how much you may have earned. This amount would
include your net earnings (income less cost of goods less
business expenses) from self-employment. The mere fact that
you may have SE income does not preclude you from continuing
to collect UI benefits. It may impact how much you collect
and ultimately lead to a cessation of benefits.

The laws regarding unemployment are not tax related.
Moreover, they are state specific. Contact your state labor
board.

I believe that your state unemployment office would like to
know that you are now self-employed.

Report to them, the income that you earn (gross, not net
profit) in the week(s) that you earn them.

Tell them that it is part-time work (contract work) and that
it may not continue.

Tell them that then.

Check with your unemploymenet ofice and see, but you
probably will have to report the gross income received from
your client in the week you receive it.

Nor do you want to be charged with a crime of fraud. Talk
to the unemployment people (call the state office number if
you must) and honestly report the income you receive.

Default small business and unemployment

the victim of corporate downsizing 2 times in 5 years, i
want to start my own business. I recently became an LLC/
sole proprietor amd have spent some money on start up costs.
I also currently collect unemployment and plan to until i
start generating income. Given the following scenario...
what can i do?

I recieve $5,000 from a customer... 3500 covers materials
and 1500 is my profit/ labor cost. it may be my only job
for 2-3 months. Can i continue to collect unemployment. My
business is part time and i am actively looking for a full
time position. My business is my back-up plan.

Can I draw a salary of $100.00 per week to not disqualify me
from unemployment or should i report earnings that week and
not take an unemployment check. if i report earnings that
week will I have to explain that i earned it from my own
company

I cannot support my family on my business at this time and i
do not want to open a can of worms with the unemployment
office.

any advice appreciated
