Aside from the normal real estate taxes that you would be
subject to by moving to Westchester, Yonkers has a resident
income tax surcharge of 5% of the net NYS income tax after
adjustments for credits for child & dependent care, NYS EIC
& college tuition. Yonkers would like to increase this to
10% going back to 1/1/05, but it needs Albany's approval.
Yonkers relationship with Albany has been extremely poor for
many years so it is by no means certain that this will pass
this year or in the near future.

NYC used to impose a nonresident income tax on commuters,
but this was eliminated a number of years ago. Its
reimposition is resurrected as a proposal by NYC in times of
fiscal troubles, but Albany has not been sympathetic.

First of all, the correct spelling is Westchester. A web
search on the wrong name won't yield decent results.

The instructions for the New York tax return have a chart to
fill out to determine the tax due to Yonkers. The
instructions are over 4 megabytes, but if you want to
download them, go here:

http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/2004/inc/it201i_2004.pdf

The chart is on page 37.

The simple answer is that the marginal tax rate for Yonkers
is 5%. (Bronxville doesn't have a separate income tax.)
