The employees in each IRS service center's refund inquiry
unit have access to the PACER system. PACER is an acronym
(I don't remember what it stands for) for the Financial
Management Service's (FMS) computerized database of federal
payments. The refund inquiry unit employees are able to
request an imaged copy of the front and back of a negotiated
refund check, provided the check was issued within the last
5 or 6 years. The taxpayer to whom the check was made
payable should prepare a written request for a PACER print
of the front and back of the check. Either spouse can
request a copy of married filing joint (MFJ) refund check.
The service center usually will respond within about 30
days.

A phone call to IRS takes care of whether a refund check was
issued and how much it was for. He can also request a copy
of the cancelled check.

Does he not have a copy of that return? If not, he can get
that information from IRS by requesting a copy of it.

assuming you are a tax practitioner,
you can call the irs tax practitioner hotline with him on a
conference call and the irs can tell him the date issued and
amount of the refund check; also inquire of the irs
personnel at the hotline, seems he should be able to obtain
a copy of the refund check, front and back, from the
government

Default What info can be had on a refund check?

I've had a question put to me that I've never encountered
before. It comes from a new client. who is separated going
through a divorce. He is sure that his wife got the refund
check from their 2003 Form 1040 tax filing, and wants to
know if she indeed got that check and has cashed it, how
much it was for, etc. Can this information be had? They did
file jointly that year.
