PACER is an acronym (I don't remember what it stands for) for the Financial Management Service's (FMS) computerized database of federal payments. The refund inquiry unit employees are able to request an imaged copy of the front and back of a negotiated refund check, provided the check was issued within the last 5 or 6 years. The taxpayer to whom the check was made payable should prepare a written request for a PACER print of the front and back of the check. Either spouse can request a copy of married filing joint (MFJ) refund check. The service center usually will respond within about 30 days. He is sure that his wife got the refund check from their 2003 Form 1040 tax filing, and wants to know if she indeed got that check and has cashed it, how much it was for, etc. Can this information be had?
