You include nothing from your 2003 state return on your 2004
federal Schedule A. The state tax is considered paid in the
year in which it was withheld, in this case 2003. You paid
no additional tax with the return when you filed it in 2004.

The only state tax you would include on the 2004 Sch. A is
the withholding that took place in 2004.

Default State & Local Tax Deduction?

Hello. Do I include my prior year state income taxes on
Federal Form 1040, Schedule A, Line 5, State and Local
Taxes, or just any additional tax due paid with the return?

Example: say my tax table line 19 tax, from 2003 Wisconsin
Form 1 is $500.00, my line 32 net tax (after credits) is
$200.00, and I had $300.00 in withholding tax resulting in a
refund of $100.00.

Which amount do I include on my 2004 Schedule A, Line 5,
State and Local Taxes, if any?

Thank you,

Tom
