| Yes, the IRS will be able to see both of your payments and refund the overpayment. Make the phone call and follow up every 10 weeks until the money is refunded. It took two phone calls an six months for one of my clients to get his money back in a similar situation. And to skip some future estimates for what you shouldn't owe. They may refund your over payment or they may not. But by June 15th you should be able to find out. Right now you would be very lucky to find anyone to tell you anything you can count on as the payments likely haven't posted at the IRS with your return yet. | Just wanted to add.. IRS says to just wait, and they'll send me a check. This doesn't sit well with me -- as they say they don't even have records of my payments yet. (Although, if I call the EFTPS hotline, the people there can see the one paid through EFTPS on 4/15.. If I call the e-file payment status hotline, the one processed through turbotax on 4/18 is there; however calling 1-800-879-1040, they can't see either!) So, has anyone actually known the IRS to automatically send money back when taxes are overpaid on a specific return? Is this something I can actually count on; that is, is the IRS really in the habit of saying "Oh, sorry, you paid too much, here's a check!"?? I always thought that the IRS will let you know if you paid too little, but if you paid too much, they're not in any hurry to figure this on their own and let you know.. If they are right, I'm wondering how long the "just wait" will be.. They weren't able to say. Days? Weeks? Months? I realize this is all my dumb mistake but I'm really surprised nobody can just look and say "Oh, look, two identical payments two days apart - OK, we'll credit one back.." I imagine there's nothing different about the way TurboTax does things that calling Intuit would help, right?? I deeply appreciate any advice, as the budget is tight at the moment and time is something I don't have too much of.. Thanks! << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

They can confirm the posting of your ELF return as well as the two direct debit payments, and then project refund date of the over payment. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

| I've made a really, really bad mistake.. That, or I just didn't look at Turbotax close enough. Here's the problem.. Last year, I paid my taxes via direct debit in Turbotax. I didn't want to do that this year - but either I missed that part of TurboTax completely, or accidentally left the box checked (I was 100% sure I didn't, but here's what happened anyways..) I paid via EFTPS ($1875), but I got debited my balance due by TurboTax also ($1875 again!). So, I am now sitting here with two payments cashed by the US Treasury for the same amount, both gone from my bank account. Unfortunately, there was enough money in there, so they both processed. This is bad, because I already sent in my first estimated payment, too... I have a feeling there may be arm twisting to get this money back. Please, somebody tell me there's a simple solution -- since I'm out a lot of money for the month due to this mistake and I don't even know where to start... Would the IRS, if I call them, see both of these payments, and be able to refund me directly??!?! Thanks very much for any help you can give! << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
