The extra > was included only with the first line of each
paragraph, and I agree that IF the moderator had posted
paragraphs as one long line that could explain the
first-line-per-paragraph-only behavior of this extra > .
However, it does not explain why there was a > at all in new

Moderator:
I found the problem. The extra "> " occurred because I did
not have the current version of the moderation software on
the computer I used to post that day.

If by this, you mean that the first line, not EACH line, of
a quoted paragraph is the only one with the "> " (or other
character), it is not a glitch in the posting software but
an incompatability between newsreader software packages.
Apparently, there is some software that will send an entire
paragraph as a single line, while other software will
actuall insert <CR> <LF> as needed to wrap the lines to the
desired length.

Only the moderator can tell us about any quirks with his reader.

No, that's not it, because the glitch occurred in posts that
had _no_ quoted material, i.e., were all original text.

Perhaps, if they were all from one or a few people. I didn't
check the names of the posters, but will if messages like
this show up again.

Oh come now, that many users making the same error? while
I'm no authority on newsgroups' mechanics, it would appear
that Dick's server had the brief glitch.

Then the explanation is simple: user error. The software
quotes the earlier post with "> " at the beginning of every
line. The person doing the followup edits that, but leaves
in too many "> "s.

Yes, that is how I should have originally described the
glitch. Use of the word "quoted" in the subject and text of
my original message was not a correct use of "quoted" and
has confused a lot of people.

The OP in this thread wasn't talking about the prefixes on
every line of quoted text in responses. He was talking
about the fact that some postings in a recent batch had "> "
at the beginning of the first line of each paragraph of
*new* text, not quoted text.

I hope not.

The problem is that it was only the first line of each
paragraph that was quoted with "> "; it should be every line.

Thanks Bill. Based on the two previous replies I thought I
had not explained the issue correctly.

I have seen it also and have no explanation for it as there
have been no changes in the software in the past few months.

I rubbed my eyes, but yes, I saw it too.

figured it was just a temporary glitch in the posting
software.

I saw it too. It has occasionally happened in the past.

No, you weren't the only one. I also hope it's a temporary
glitch. It's disconcerting to see responses chopped up like
that.

Nope, in the "reply" function of your mail/news reader one
of the options allows for this.

In Outlook Express for example, you go to "tools",
"options", "send", and the "plain text settings" in the
"news" section. My options are for a "> ", "|", or ":" in
the text replied to.

You're the only one - perhaps you did too many returns.
