You do not need the form 1099-misc to report the income. All
of the income and the expenses go on Schedule C then flows
to Schedule SE for the Self employment tax and also to form
1040, page 1, line 12. The SE tax goes on line 57, page 2,
form 1040.

On Schedule C. Just like if you had gotten the 1099-MISC.

On Schedule C.

You can't. Well, if the company ever reports more than you
claimed they paid you, the IRS will send you a note about
it.

The IRS doesn't care if you report more payments than has
been reported to the IRS. Where they care is if you report
less.

assuming you were indeed an independent contractor and not
an employee for the poorly organized start-up company for
the company you worked for last year (among other
assumptions, like you being required to pay u.s. federal
income tax, you being paid nonemployee compensation by the
company, etc.),

* you would have been a self employed sole proprietor
(unless other facts exist, like you were incorporated, etc.)
providing consulting services and the income would be
reported on schedule c within your form 1040

* the applicable expenses would be deducted on schedule c
within your form 1040

* you could contact the irs (1-800-829-1040 or you may need
a tax practiotioner - e.g. cpa etc. - to call with you) and
have the irs send you IRP transcripts which should show all
1099 income (interest, dividends, proceeds from stock sales,
nonemployee compensation, etc.) paid to you and reported to
the irs for the given tax year

* it will remain to be seen how the company reports your
earnings to the irs, how the irs might match it would be
based on how the company reported it, noting the irs could
follow up with the company if the company files an
incomplete (i.e. no social security number for you on it)
form 1099-misc showing nonemployee compensation paid to you

theoretically, as long as you report on your return the
proper amount of income received from the company, if the
company botches up their reporting to the irs ultimately it
should be of no consequence to you

there are many nuances which can effect a self employed
person, like if you paid health insurance premiums during
the year they might be deductible "above the line" in
arriving at adjusted gross income

is an extension request in the making for april 15th?

consider checking with a competent return preparer (e.g.
cpa, etc.) to see if you might benefit form their services

Don't worry about it. Just report your true income. Be
sure you have records as to income received, when received,
and in what form.

Hah! easy. they can't match it up, but that's not to say
you can ignore your income. Do the right thing.

Default Question re reporting consulting income...

Hi all,

Thanks in advance for your help.

I worked for 3 months last year as an independent consultant
for a poorly organized start-up, and received about 30K in
income for my services (with no taxes taken out). I have
approx 3.5K in unreimbursed expenses. Despite numerous
requests, I have not received a 1099-MISC from the company.

My questions are as follows:

* How/where do I report this income?
* How/where do I deduct the expenses?
* How can I find out the amount the company reports to the
IRS? I'd prefer to work discrepancies (if any) out sooner,
rather than later.
* Finally, the company does not have my social security
number. How will they report my earnings to the IRS, and
how will the IRS match them with my filings?

Regards,
Andrew
