The 1040X (and Massachusetts C-1) has a place where they ask
you to tell which line numbers changed. So I entered the
lines on the 1040 that were changed. But I didn't enter the
lines on the supporting forms that fed into those lines.

The updated return is all in my TurboTax file, so when the
time comes I can easily print out whatever forms are needed.
It will be kind of involved, since the change was an
additional K-1, which feeds into several forms.

I'm guessing Massachusetts won't bother me. I included a
check for an additional $5 with the amendment form. But my
Federal amendment is an additional $275 tax credit, so
they'll probably want to scrutinize it.

What can happen is they simply change your tax comp. If you
clearly explain the income/deduction items changed, IRS
knows what consequential changes will follow, like 7.5% x
AGI on medical. But the attachments can better ensure an
IRS EE having a bad day won't unwittingly generate an
incorrect computer notice. Also, merely ticking off the
consequential change items on the back of 1040X should work
too.

Fret not, but just expect a letter and have the missing
forms ready to send, but not before the letter comes.

Damn, somehow I missed all the responses in the thread I
started. Someone sent me a direct email that I think said
just the 1040X.

And today, before seeing your message, I just mailed in the
1040X with no attached forms. What'll the IRS do with it?

Not so, Barry. Everyone I remember who responded affirmed
that any schedules or forms that changed because of the
1040x must be attached to the amendment. Omit any form
that did not change.

Others will chime in and affirm I'm sure.

I asked a similar question a couple of weeks ago, and was
told that you only have to file the 1040X, not any of the
modified forms.

Default 1040X: What are proper attachments?

Knowing I was getting a refund, I filed my 2004 taxes
electronically (TurboTax online) in early February once I
received all of my 1099s, W-2s, etc. Then a few weeks later
I received a revised 1099-DIV indicating additional
qualified dividends (record date was in late December,
payout date in January...left off original 1099-DIV, but I
digress). So now I need to file 1040X to pay back some of
the refund. I made the changes to my return online for the
1040X and printed it, but now I need to know what
attachments need to be sent along with this.

Obviously, Schedule B needs to be attached, since it shows
the additional dividends. However, the additional dividends
changed computations on other forms such as:

1. Allowable student loan interest deduction (pg. 1 of 1040)
was slightly reduced.

2. The amount of my tax attributed to AMT (6251) was
slightly reduced.

Does the IRS need an ammended form/schedule in which a
calculated value has changed from the original return or
does it need only forms/schedules in which changes to
income/deductions are reported? If the answer is the
former, then it appears that I need to attach a lot of
forms. If it's the latter, then the ammended Schedule B
alone would suffice, correct?

Regards,
Chris
