Iowa has an EIC: it is 6.5% of the federal EIC. It's not> income credit (with the exception of Alaska's PayBack Tax > from oil royalties <G> ). refundable, though the Iowa child & dependent care credit is. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

| Thanks for the excellent responses. I was employed for most of 2004, and my AGI was quite low. My state is California and the refund is also larger than the witholdings. I'll check out the values and see if an extra digit or some other problem is causing this. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

MN - but we call it the Working Family Credit. for years it> income credit was computed at 10% of the fed EIC, but a couple years back they bumped it up and use their own WFC (eic) credit tables. Not an earned income credit - buy NY gives a college tuition> income credit (with the exception of Alaska's PayBack Tax > from oil royalties <G> ). credit even if income is so low that no taxes are due - resulting in up to $400 payment from the state to the TP. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

Welcome to New York. Not only do we have an Earned Income> income credit (with the exception of Alaska's PayBack Tax > from oil royalties <G> ). Credit which is refundable, we also have a Child Care Tax Credit which is refundable! And our ever popular refundable Real Property Tax Credit for Homeowners and Renters. -- Don EA in Upstate NY << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

I would certainly double-check your W-2 form entries. On> greatest updates. I have triple checked the > amounts that I entered. I also > took a credit for estimated sales tax. one of our quality reviews, we discovered an additional digit had been slipped in somewhere, and a 4-figure entry had turned into 5-figures. The only way your Federal refund could be higher than your withholding, is because of the Earned Income Credit and/or Additional Child Tax Credit. But those are limited to low- (or relatively low-) income people. If your AGI is above $35,000, you've undoubtedly made a mistaken entry or two. But I haven't heard of any _state_ which has the earned income credit (with the exception of Alaska's PayBack Tax from oil royalties <G> ). | Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) can bump up your refund as $4300, depending on your circumstances. Look on line (Form 1040) 65a and see if there is a figure on that line. That figure may be the difference for which you are looking. | I am using TurboTax with the latest and greatest updates. I have triple checked the amounts that I entered. For some reason TurboTax is telling me that my federal and state refunds are higher than what was actually withheld on my W-2s. Is this possible? I have donated stuff to the salvation army and I have donated cash to nonprofit groups. I have 2 children in which I declared the preschool and after school care. I had taxes and mortgage interest on my house. I also took a credit for estimated sales tax. Any help is appreciated. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
