This reminds me a return I saw that was outsourced. It had
a Schedule C for work done as a contractor. On an
additional line for gross income was a line item for
"Independent Income". How one becomes independent from
one's self is beyond me, but I am no more a fan of
outsourced returns than I am of the chains.

If you were unemployed, what were these jobs on the side of?

You use Schedulae C and SE to report taxes on self employment.

You report it as "self-employment" income. You can use
either Schedule C or C-EZ (if your expenses are less than
$5,000). You'll find the principal bad news is that about
15% of that will become a "below-the-line" tax -- i.e.,
assessed _after_ deductions and credits.

You should use Schedule C or C-EZ.

There may be other forms or schedules (SE, 4562, etc) that
you may also need.

Default side jobs

Last year I was unemployed but did some side jobs as a
carpenter. Got paid in cash. Now how do I report this
income on my 1040? I'm married and filing jointly. Thank
you.
