| If the IRS' calculations show that you overpaid, then yes, they'll send you the difference. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

Yes, if it a simple math error.> make a mistake and overpay my taxes, will the IRS catch this > and refund me? << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

Maybe but I wouldn't count on it. IRS computers routinely catch arithmetic errors on paper> some reason I make a mistake and overpay > my taxes, will the IRS catch this and refund > me? returns, and issue refunds. In the case of a mistaken entry on a software program, this is not as readily apparent. If you erred in the entry for your income, for example, by transposing a digit and entering $73,000 instead of $37,000), this might not be caught -- though one would expect that _you_ would notice the excessive taxes. Were it to be based on a W-2 or 1099, eventually IRS matching programs should pick it up -- but perhaps not for more than a year. And if it was an error on a Schedule C, reporting income from self employment, it might never be caught. Depends on what type of ~mistake~ you made, below are two> make a mistake and overpay my taxes, will the IRS catch this > and refund me? common scenarios. If you transcribed the wages from your W-2 as a larger figure into turbo tax, this will not get lowered with out you initiating an amended return. If you transcribe the Federal Tax With Held from the W-2, as a smaller amount . You have shortened your current refund, the error might be detected on the Annual CP-2000 screening, this class of cases are a low priority. This type of error is benefiting the Government by holding your funds, if you want to correct the error, it would benefit you to act on the issue by filing an amended return, ASAP. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

| Maybe. When I did taxes before computer programs, and paid too much due to a calculation error, they pointed it out to me and gave a refund. If it is an error of omission, i.e. forgetting a deduction, then you are out of luck. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
