Ah - but such expenses still have to be allowable elsewhere
under the IRC. IRC 162(f) is what kills this.

But if he were not fired, mearly suspended, with some of our
local governments I would not be surprised.

I think not driving drunk is an important principal of
school bus operation. The same materials in an OSHA training
program would be deductible.

I don't think the subject material in these classes has
anything to do with the job skills of a driver or pilot.
Isn't part of these classes typically images of blood and
gore caused by drunk drivers? :-0

Let me guess. She read this just before she got behind the
wheel? Seriously, here's a breakdown:

1. Educational expense: Does it enhance her job skills?
2. Taxes: Not applied evenly, so no.
3. Medical: This is a vveeeerrrrryyy big stretch, has she
been diagnosed as an alcoholic? Will the class help her
avoid alcohol?

That's as creative as I can see, but still can't find a way
to make a DUI school deductible. Tell her to suck it up and
be thankful she didn't kill anybody while driving in an
impaired state.

I hope and believe that if she had a DUI she would be, at
best, a former school bus driver.

If she were a pilot or school bus driver she would/should be
fired; and possibly not have sufficient income against which
to deduct anything.

Careful. Expenses in connection with producing income from
an illegal activity are deductible.

Still not deductible since that driver would have been fired
for having had a DUI offense.

If you do something illegal (DUI is), you may not deduct any
of the expenses for that act.

As an amount in lieu of a fine or penalty, no deduction [IRC
162(f)?].

It's not deductible.

For most it would not be deductible. But if she were a pilot
or school bus driver?

Default DUI class fee deduction

I'm going to be doing a friends taxes this weekend. She
took court ordered DUI classes which she had to pay for.
She said she read somewhere that these fees, or at least
part of them, are tax deductible. We reside in Illinois. I
can't seem to find any information on this. Does anyone
know anything about this? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you,
Bluto87
