I guess you can not expect much from a $10 (after > rebate) program. form: "Taxable amount not determined" and "total amount". If that doesn't work, try the free version of TaxAct from http://www.taxact.com/ The free version is limited but it may give you an idea if this situation is handled correctly. -- To reply to me directly, remove the XXX characters from my email address. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

This would require that you had previously made non-deductible contributions to the IRA. Then you would have to fill out form 8606 to calculate the taxable portion. But your custodian would not have the data necessary to make that calculation, and so your 1099-R could not have shown $4,000 in box 2a. -- Don EA in Upstate NY << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

| When I enter IRA distributions during the TaxCut Standard "interview" the program lets me enter the gross distributionm, e.g., $5,000 and the taxable distribution, e.g., $4,000. The program should then transfer these amounts to lines 15a and 15b of the Form 1040. However, the program ignores the amount of taxable distribution and enters instead the gross distribution as taxable distribution on line 15b. The only way I can fix it is by overwriting. Similarly, I can not find during the "interview" a place to enter "Other Income" on line 21. Again I had to overwrite. When I tried to send email to the support of TaxCut it was rejected. I guess you can not expect much from a $10 (after rebate) program.
