Since I wrote this I contacted the CPA firm that sent out
the 1099 with the wrong information, and they said they
would send out a corrected 1099 at once. They had not yet
sent the forms to the IRS, so this seems to have worked out
OK. Apparently they had a lot of wrong information because
the previous CPA who handled this died and did not leave
very good records....

Send a letter if the amount is big enough. I recall fondly
the Highway Use Tax demand sent to the Elizabeth River
Tunnel Authority, which began, "Dear Ms. Tunnel:".

Go ahead and report it correctly and don't worry about the
1099.

Either ignore the error or add a notation on the line you
report the dividend on.

Nothing. And that should answer the rest of your query.

Default Wrong 1099-div?

My father died in Sept 2003 and used to own shares in a
private club which liquidated sometime in 2004. The check
was made payable to him and I was able to deposit it into a
checking account in the name of the estate. That was no
problem.

I recently received a 1099-div from the organization which
reports the money in box 8 as a cash distribution. I plan
to report this income on the final tax return for the
estate.

However, the 1099 shows my father as the recipient; also the
SS# on the form is my mother's, who has been deceased since
1987! I am trying to contact the CPA who sent out the
forms, but I only have an address. Is is likely that I can
get him to issue a corrected 1099 with the estate as the
recipient and the TIN for the estate? Assuming the worst (no
corrected 1099 is issued), should I just report the income
on the estate 2004 return and ignore the error or should I
note this on the return?

What do you think the IRS will do with a 1099 issued with
the SS# of a person dead for 18 years?
