Yes, you can file an amended return (1040X for Federal,
don't know about NY)

On Taxcut it should be pretty easy, but I've never done it.
There is a deadline. For Federal returns, 2002 deadline is
April 15, 2006 and for 2003, deadline is April 15, 2007,
assuming you filed on time. Don't know the dates for NY.

You should be able to correct the tax forms using the 1040X
for Federal and whatever form NYS uses to amend your tax
forms . Most times you have 3 years from filing date to
amend . Last time to amend 2001 tax form is April 15th 2005

Yes, you can. It's not that difficult. The deadline is 3
years after you filed the original return.

You have to file amended returns for each year. For the
federal you use Form 1040X and for New York State you use
Form IT-201-X. If you do it with TaxCut, you should use the
program for the year you are amending, i.e. TaxCut 2002 to
amend your 2002 returns and TaxCut 2003 to amend 2003.

Here are the steps to get started in TaxCut 2002. I assume
2003 would be similar, but I don't have TaxCut for 2003.

Click the "Take Me To ..." button. In the list of topics,
near the end of the Federal section, click "Amended Return,"
then click Go. Answer Yes to the question "Do you need to
change a Form 1040 . . . that you previously filed . . .?"
On the next screen, on the right side, click the help
question "What if I want to file an amended return . . .?"
and follow the instructions that are displayed. The
interview does not walk you through it.

Doing the state is similar. There is an "Amended Return"
topic near the end of the State section of the topics list.
There are no helpful instructions, but hopefully after doing
the federal you will get the idea.

Since TaxCut doesn't give you much help, you should take a
look at the IRS instructions for Form 1040X, which you can
download from the following link.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf

You can find the instructions for New York Form IT-201-X on
the NY Department of Taxation web site:

Yes you may, at least on federal.

BTW, does this have anything to do with certain Merrill
Lynch accounts?

Use the 1040-X in TaxCut. I think the deadline is three
years after the return was due, but others will have to
confirm that.

Default Correcting errors in 2002 and 2003?

I failed to deduct investment fees in 2002 and 2003. This
year it will save me $800 in Federal and $200 in NYS tax.

I don't know about 2002 and 2003, but presume they will be
appproximately the same. I did everything on "taxcut", so
recalculating will be easy enough.

Can I correct the returns and get my overpayment back,
either federal or NY? How difficult a thing is it to do? Is
there a deadline?

Thanks.
