Because being tax-exempt is not a reason by itself to make> both Federal and State tax exempt?? them subject to AMT. The only type of muni bond subject to AMT is a private activity bond. If you bought the bond, then your confirmation would have told you if it was subject to AMT, i.e., it is a private activity bond. If the bond is held in an investment account you may need to ask the company. If the bonds are in a mutual fund you own, then the 1099 has to tell you how much of the exempt interest is subject to AMT. -- Alan http://taxtopics.net << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
