Most international scholars are holding F or J type visas.
As such they are exempt from the substantial presence test
and are classified as nonresident aliens. If you are in
this category, you file Form 1040NR-EZ and attach Form 8843.
Your bank interest is not taxable.

I don't have the Iowa rules as to who is a resident or
nonresident of the state. However, if this is your only
income, it probably doesn't matter as Iowa will tax it the
same. Iowa will tax the bank interest.

Your filing status is married nonresident alien. Just
complete the front of the 1040Nr-EZ. Put your wages on Line
3; state income tax withheld on Line 11; $3100 on Line 13.
Then, just do the math (addition and subtraction) and look
up your taxes from the table. You should get a small
refund.

Default Alien question

Hello,
I was a visitor research scolar from IOWA. I've stayed for a
year in Iowa. My home country is Turkey. I'm married and my
husband was in Turkey. My total wage is 15,780.97 Federal
income Tax is 1,679.65 and state income tax withheld is
548.70. I've got an amount of 15.36 from my saving accounts
(form 1099-INT) which form do I have to file (1040EZ or 1040
NR or 1040NR-EZ I think one of these)
Do I qualify for a refund?

Thank you
Baran
