If it's just a software glitch and there is no override a
good work around would be to enter a fake SSN for husband
just to get past the software... then after printing the
return, white it out and hand write in UNKNOWN for SSN
before signing.

Note: If she files HoH, there is no requirement to include
a spouse SSN.

All tax software of which I've ever heard doesn't allow
typing in "unk-no-own".

And btw, no one is required to file HOH.

MFS. If the software doesn't allow you to file without a
spouse's SSN, then print out the return, write UNKNOWN in
the SSN box and mail it in.

Her filing status is still MFS, regardless of the software.

Should be provision for an override, no?

And if she can't file electronically, then a paper return is
called for. Nothing wrong with that.

Either try a different software package or prepare the
return by hand on paper.

Has she (or you) tried typing in "Unknown" in that SSN
space? She has to file as married filing separately or head
of household, if children are involved.

If the software does not allow her to e-file, then a paper
return must be prepared. If she's still married, she files
MFS.

Default filing status

Woman is "married" but has not seen husband in 4 years! She
knows he is alive but does not know his SSN and there are no
dependents. What if the software will not "let" her file MFS
without his SSN? What's her filing status?
