It's been known to happen. There is usually (at CalTech,
anyway), around one person a decade who is admitted to
the graduate program, or a joint graduate-undergraduate
program, directly out of high school. Of course, most
of them are on full scholarship, so the question of credit
is moot. (I was that person in 1972.)

I probably wouldn't be so critical of a software product
that I had never used, especially since the poster of this
problem appears to not fully understand the rules applicable
to the credits in question.

And for the record, I seized upon "tax credit for tuition
fees" and didn't see his reference to "Hope credit for both
of us."

Woops - just noticed that you asked about TaxActOnline and I
responded with the group for TaxCut. For TaxAct see:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TaxACTors/

As before, I can't be sure this group has knowledge of the
online version of TaxAct.

If you have an issue with how to use a web based program,
you should consult the company that owns the program.

If you are grad students there is NO HOPE for either of you
(yuk, yuk). Try the Lifetime Credit instead.

No experience with TaxactOnline, however, something is
rotten in that software. You MAY have to buy TurboTAx or
other commercial software. After all, you get what you pay
for; usually, that is.

The Hope credit is available ONLY until the first 2 years of
post- secondary education are completed. If you are both
graduate students, it's doubtful that you still qualify for
this credit. Try the Lifetime Learning credit.

Actually, the Hope Credit only applies to students who are
in their first two years of undergraduate work. If you are
graduate students, you have the option of the Lifetime
Learning Credit, or the tuition adjustment on Line 27 (I
think) of Form 1040.

That might explain why the software doesn't let you do that.....

Part of this question concerns tax law, which I will not
comment on. However, if the law allows the Hope Credit for
both people when MFJ, then your real question is about the
operation of the TaxCutOnline software. There is a Yahoo
Group set up for discussion of TaxCut software:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hrbTaxCut/

but I don't know if this group also deals with TaxCutOnline.
Have you asked TaxCutOnline support for an answer?

If you are graduate students, neither of you qualify for the
Hope Credit. You may qualify for the lifetime learning
credit.

If you are grad students, neither of you is eligible for the
HOPE credit. Freshman or Sophmore undergraduates only.

I'm not sure how you conned it into doing that, since
neither of you is eligible for the Hope credit. It's for
only undergrads in the first two years. You need the
Lifetime Learning Credit or the adjustment to income on the
1040.

Default How to add my wife also as a student to get Hope Credit?

Me and my wife are both graduate students and we want to get
tax credit for the tuition fees that we have paid to the
University, but the TaxactOnline does not let us enter the
Hope Credit for both of us. It only let's me myself
recognised as a student eligible for Hope Credit but does
not even ask if I want to add another student (which will be
my wife) as a student who can qualify for Hope credit. Why
is this so here? How would I add two students for Hope
education credit here? Please help, thanks a lot. As as an
additional piece of info here, we are married filing
jointly.
