It's been known to happen. There is usually (at CalTech,> post- secondary education are completed. If you are both > graduate students, it's doubtful that you still qualify for > this credit. anyway), around one person a decade who is admitted to the graduate program, or a joint graduate-undergraduate program, directly out of high school. Of course, most of them are on full scholarship, so the question of credit is moot. | The Hope credit is available ONLY until the first 2 years of post- secondary education are completed. If you are both graduate students, it's doubtful that you still qualify for this credit. Try the Lifetime Learning credit. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

If you are graduate students, you have the option of the Lifetime Learning Credit, or the tuition adjustment on Line 27 (I think) of Form 1040. That might explain why the software doesn't let you do that..... Bryan -- Bryan Kellar, EA Oregon Tax Help, Inc. However, if the law allows the Hope Credit for both people when MFJ, then your real question is about the operation of the TaxCutOnline software. There is a Yahoo Group set up for discussion of TaxCut software: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hrbTaxCut/ but I don't know if this group also deals with TaxCutOnline. I'm not sure how you conned it into doing that, since> tax credit for the tuition fees that we have paid to the > University, but the TaxactOnline does not let us enter the > Hope Credit for both of us. neither of you is eligible for the Hope credit. | Me and my wife are both graduate students and we want to get tax credit for the tuition fees that we have paid to the University, but the TaxactOnline does not let us enter the Hope Credit for both of us. It only let's me myself recognised as a student eligible for Hope Credit but does not even ask if I want to add another student (which will be my wife) as a student who can qualify for Hope credit. Why is this so here? How would I add two students for Hope education credit here? Please help, thanks a lot.
