Looked at all copies of W2, State ID is blank. Have called
employer and he would reissue W2. Thanks for help.

It would help to know which s/w you use because some systems
do a check for "valid" EIN. The latter does not include MA
which has more durn types, sizes, and styles of MA EIN than
you can shake a mouse at!

Right. In Taxwise one could easily enter "OnesOnesOnes"
and all would be well, because the value of that field is a
(literal??) string anyway. (as opposed to a numeric string.

C$,
HL

(C$ is a string)

I can't speak for all the states nor can I speak for every
piece of software, but.... generally all that is required in
the field is a number, any number. I use Taxwise and when
the CA state EIN is missing I just enter the federal EIN.
Some of my compatriots enter a string of ones.

Nope. My software generates a warning, but the e-file
passes just fine.

Don't you have to have a state number if you efile?? (or
does that very by state) I'm a newbie to efiling but it
seems that last year I got critical warnings if there was
not a state number in the box. I just used all 9s on a few
of them if I remember correctly.

There is nothing wrong with having no EIN in the state EIN
box. If you must then use the federal EIN# also in the
state box. (18 I think).

I believe the control number (which is optional) is just for
the use of the preparer of the W-2s, i.e., the employer. It
has nothing to do with the state ID number.

The state employer ID number is not your problem. Just use
the income and withholding numbers that are reported and
don't worry about the state employer ID.

In some states the state ID is the same as the federal. But
call your employer to see if they need to re-issue the W-2.

The Control Number in Box a is optional - for use by the
employer for their own purposes. Have you checked all copies
of your W-2?

Default Blank State Tax ID but Control Number

I received W2 from employer. All inforamtion looks good
except State Employer's State ID is balnk. However I do see
Control Number (0018). IS there any relation of Control# and
State Employer's State ID ? W2 shows State Income Tax with
held amount.
