Dick:

I assume this comment was directed to me not Harlan since it
was tagged on the bottom of my post. The posts I sent that
didn't show up were tax related without an attitude (I had a
few of those rejected when I started here). My policy, and
I am not suggesting it should or should not apply to others,
is to re-read a post before pressing send. If I have to
think about rewording for anything beyond clarity, grammar
and spelling then I just press the delete button.

If this one doesn't get posted I would assume it was because
it was off topic.

Dick: I do not recall ever deleting anything from you, Drew.

I don't care for the Google interface. Am using Xnews for
my newsreader.

Compuserve used to be quite good for newsgroups, and Verizon
is excellent. News group coverage is one of the reasons I
have Verizon DSL. Currently the NY metro deal - 1 year [at]
$29.95/mo for 3.0Mbps down/768 Kbps up. Wireless
router/modem (Westell 327W) free with the 1 year commitment.
Great verizon specific newsgroups for help with problems.

(Sorry, Dick, this is not to be construed as an
advertisement for the bozos at Verizon, just for their DSL
connectivity - their email is not to be trusted).

What's the problem with using Google groups? All you have to
do is sign up for a free signon, and you can read and post
on regular usernet newgroups as well as the Google unique
groups. Just enter the full group usernet group name (like
misc.taxes.moderated) when searching for groups to subscribe
to.

I've never had consistent good luck with the news servers
offered by ISPs, but I am currently "auditioning" my current
ISP's server (never used it before).

I also have Prodigy news as a part of my ISP contract. And
they are hottible. Individual.net has been very good. I'm
not going to bitch about having to pay $12 per year.

BellSouth and also Roadrunner are much worse at letting the
kooks post to moderated groups. I seldom see them when
using news.individual.net. On the other hand sometimes I
try to post and it never makes it to the newsgroup. I don't
think Dick has rejected them so I have assumed it was a
problem at news.individual.net.

Dick: Sometimes I do, Harlan!

sure, there are free or almost free alternatives such as
www.teranews.com or the free http://www.talkabouttaxes.com

You are actually asking about a news server, not a reader,
which is the program used to read newsgroups..

Any worthwhile isp offers newgroups. Like Bellsouth.net,
earthlink.com, two I know and have used. Am sure they're
more. How about msn.com? or Netscape.com? Netlink.com?
Look around for one, then use the news reader in your
browser and configure it to access.

Default newsgroup reader (may not be on topic...)

As of April 1st, News.individual.net will no longer be free.
With Groups.google.com having redone themselves into
uselessness, and AOL dropping newsgroups, the options for
free usenet access are dwindling.

Anybody have any alternatives?
