This is exactly the way that the Tax School in IL told us to
do it.

Default Wages or Schedule C

Student worked for a 501(c)(3) organization part-time under
a so-called internship program while attending college last
year. The student had assigned work hours, was supervised,
and performed clerical tasks similar to those performed by
other employees of the organization. Basically, just a
part-time grunt.

The organization sent the student a 1099-MISC instead of a
W-2. I understand it is not uncommon for 501(c)(3)
organizations to report their intern part-timers in this
manner.

IMO, the student should report the income as wages rather
than Schedule C / SE tax income, and report his share of SS
and Medicare on form 4137.

Does this sound about right? I find nothing that would
indicate compensation of this nature is entitled to 1099
treatment, but perhaps I'm missing something.
