If it is one of those rare cases where the $10 difference kicked your friend from one bracket to the next, we're only talking $5 difference in tax owed until you get to $7,000, when it starts escalating. If you go back and check the figures against the 2004 Tax Table (in all 1040 or 1040A Instruction booklets), you can reassure yourself that you didn't cheat your friend of a penny. If you find it made a few dollars difference, the government won't scream -- and it would be cheaper for everyone (including taxpayers), if you simply gave your friend the few bucks and called it even. <smile Bill << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

To file an amendment before giving IRS time to process the return often creates more confusion than its worth. | Look the taxable income on the tax chart and see if tax is different than what was reported. If it is, use form 1040X to amend the return. | Hey guys, I did someones USA federal taxes through the free e-file on hrblock.com. After they were e-filed and accepted by the IRS we noticed that the "gross income" was entered incorrectly. I entered that he made $10 more than he actually did. The form used was the 1040EZ. Is there any reason to file an amendement form? (1040X) Or is it just wise to see if they give him his refund? I can't imagine him owing more tax over $10. Whats the best option here? Thanks! << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
