Since your son got a 1099-MISC, you should report it in his
Schedule C (or C-EZ). He did not get a W2, so it can not be
entered as a regular wage. I don't understand why you would
worry about entering this amount in Sch C. The upside is
that he can deduct some business expenses and reduce his
taxes. For example, business related meals, travel, mileage,
etc. You get the idea.

The default for 1099-MISC income reported in Box 7 as Non
Employee Compensation IS a Schedule C. The assumption is
that this IS from a trade or business. I'm not suggesting
the 1099 is correct, but that is obviously what the issuer
thought. I get local professional help to make sure.

You son was in the business of being a "Math Intern", the
income and any any related expenses get reported on Schedule
C.

If he received the payment for services he performed for the
school, then the income he received is self-employment
income that gets reported on either a Schedule C-EZ or C.

You'd need to see if this is excludable in any way; if not
Schedule C-EZ and, if over $435, Schedule SE will do the
trick.

Default Nonemployee Compensation question???

Help! I use TurboTax, but I still can not find where to
enter this! Our college age son received a fellowship when
he did a math internship at another college last summer.
The amount was reported on a 1099-misc in box 7 "Nonemployee
compensation". It mentions schedules C and F on the back,
but those are for profits and losses from business and
farming. Does anyone know where I should enter this amount?

Thanks!!
