Only scholarships and grants disbursed are to go into Box 4. A student loan refund is usually nothing more than the balance in the student loan account left over after tuition and fees have been deducted from the account. Loan disbursements are not scholarships or grants. -- Alan http://taxtopics.net << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

| I hope the tax professionals here can give me some advice on Form 1098-T that I received from my university. According to the form, my line 2 "Amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses" is less than line 4 "Scholarships or grants." However, I did not recieve any grant or scholarship money this past year. What I did receieve are student loan refunds after my federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans paid for my graduate tuition. According to the Tax Act software I'm using (and maybe I'm just not entering things correctly) because of the loan refunds I'm going to actually end up paying the government rather than getting a refund if these student loan refunds are counted as "scholarship or grant" money and therefore taxable as income. If I'm not trying to get the Hope Scholarship or Lifetime Learning Credit, do I even have to enter any of this information on my taxes anywhere? Thanks a lot! << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
