That sounds like a reasonable approach. If your parent does
qualify as your dependent and you're unmarried, the parent
is also a qualifying person for Head of Household filing
status.

See IRS Publication 501 for details on the support test and
filing status.

Default Provided paid-for condo for parent: How to calculate "support"?

My parent has no income except minimal S.S. If I buy and pay
for a condo for my parent to live in, how do I figure out if
I can declare my parent as a dependent because I have
provided more than half of my parent's "support"? Can I take
the annual figure for which such a condo would rent and
assume that I have provided that much in lodging support for
my parent? Thx. T-L
