Considering the state, are you certain that it's a W-2 and
not part of the Alaskan Dividend for oil royalties (or
whatever that is that means there's no state income tax up
there)?

Well let's analyze this for a minute. Playing devil's
advocate here, your argument as proof of an erroneous filing
is that no sane person would travel in that fashion to be an
NYC cabbie. The flaw here is that no sane person IS an NYC
cabbie regardless of where they resided. Since there are
NYC cabbies, you can reasonably reach the conclusion that
insane people are traveling to perform that job. Ergo, you
need to prove that that client was in fact sane to begin
with.

Who does this? People who are hiding from ex-wives or the
law; people who are on SS Disability and cannot allow the
income to show up; illegal aliens.

In my opinion, this is an employer/IRS problem. Since I do
not even prepare my own return, I am no authority here. But
I would treat it the same as a fraudulent 1099. Report it
to the IRS and then show it on your return, but back all the
numbers out. It would make sense that the imposter maxed
out dependents so not to have any taxes withheld. So you
only have to adjust income, SS, and medicare.

A MD client in Richmond had a W-2 issued to him from a NYC
Taxi firm. His identity was stolen. He could not get the
issuer to correct it and forever to get the IRS to accept
that no sane Richmond VA MD would travel up to NYC to drive
a Taxi.

First, a question. Where are you located; AND did you
live and work only in that state for the entire year?

For instance, if you were a citizen and resident of the
great State of Georgia for the entire twelve months, never
traveling beyond it's frontiers, I can see your question.

But, do you actually live IN Alaska?

Then maybe we can help.

Step 1 - Figure out who to call at the State of Alaska
and call them. Try matching the address on the W-2 with
information at http://www.state.ak.us/.

Step 2 - Contact the big credit reporting agencies and see
if there has been anything equally "puzzling" reported to
them about you.

Step 3 - Contact the Social Security Administration to
determine whether there has been anything equally "puzzling"
reported to them about you.

You may be a victim of identity theft. (You may also have
worked for some entity that you didn't realize was a agency
of the state of Alaska.)

Good luck.

Regards,
Bill

Yes. Call the State of Alaska. Somebody there has to know
something.

First question: Have you ever been in Alaska? Have you ever
worked for a company located in Alaska?

My niece at 18 received a CP-2000 letter claiming she did
not report wages from a job in Alaska. Someone had stolen
her identity (at 18!)and several hundred dollars from her
bank account. She does have a cousin with the identical name
but she is much younger and also still lives at home in CA
with her parents.

Check your credit record for suspicious activity. If your
answers to the questions above are NO, there may be another
YOU running around in the snow living the life of Riley (or
Firefly).

Write to the employer's name and address shown on the Form
W-2 and ask them to show how this correct. The State may
have a web page you can contact to find a phone number to
call about this.
