| 1. The SS money is hers, not yours. Therefore it is taxable to her. 2. SS is not taxable unless she has a lot of other income (like 15-20,000 worth). 3. You may want to consider whether or not you provide more than half of your step-daughter's support. The SS is provided by her for her support. Nan, EA in LA PREJUDICE can be divided into PRE-JUDGEMENTS (easier than thinking) and BIGOTRY (easier to feel good about oneself when one can push down another group). << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

If it's spent on support items, it counts toward figuring out whether she qualifies as your dependent, but if it just sits in the bank it doesn't. See IRS Publicaiton 501. | My Step-Daughter (age 11) receives monthly Checks from the Social Security because her biological Father passed away this year. Since the Checks have to be used only for my step-daughter's needs and are deposited in a separate checking acct, do we need to: 1. Claim the SSI Checks on our Joint 1040 or 2. Send in a Separate 1040EZ for my Daughter or 3. Not Claim the SSI since it's for my Step Daughter's use only. Thanks << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
