No. Not your income.

That could depend on her OTHER income, if any. At age 11, I
doubt there's anything else significant (i.e. over the
filing threshold for a dependent), unless she's a child
actor or something.

1) It's not SSI, it's social security.
2) It's HER income not YOURS.
3) The taxability rules are the same for her as for everyone
else. Run the numbers and determine if the money is
taxable to her.

1. The SS money is hers, not yours. Therefore it is
taxable to her.
2. SS is not taxable unless she has a lot of other income
(like 15-20,000 worth).
3. You may want to consider whether or not you provide more
than half of your step-daughter's support. The SS is
provided by her for her support.

PREJUDICE can be divided into PRE-JUDGEMENTS (easier than
thinking) and BIGOTRY (easier to feel good about oneself
when one can push down another group).

I'm assuming she's getting SS survivor benefits, not SSI.
If it is truly SSI, it's nontaxable by law.

It's your daughter's income. Until she has other income,
she won't have a filing requirement. If it's spent on
support items, it counts toward figuring out whether she
qualifies as your dependent, but if it just sits in the bank
it doesn't. See IRS Publicaiton 501.

Default Is SSI for a Surviving Child Taxable?

My Step-Daughter (age 11) receives monthly Checks from the
Social Security because her biological Father passed away
this year.

Since the Checks have to be used only for my step-daughter's
needs and are deposited in a separate checking acct, do we
need to:

1. Claim the SSI Checks on our Joint 1040
or
2. Send in a Separate 1040EZ for my Daughter
or
3. Not Claim the SSI since it's for my Step Daughter's
use only.

Thanks
