A man after my own heart!

I do the same, Phil, however also attached a statement with
copy of the 1099 reconciling the two.

After all, GROSS income on a return, should not be inflated.

Report what your records show you actually were paid.

IRS has a procedure for taking complaints about erroneous or
missing information returns, i.e. Forms W-2 and 1099.
However, their policy is not to take complaints until after
February 15. I recommend you contact IRS sometime shortly
after Feb. 15 and ask to them to prepare a complaint on Form
4598. IRS sends a copy to the payer and one to yourself.
Since the payer already has made their position clear, it's
not likely that the IRS inquiry will change their minds.
However, at least you will have something extra for your
records showing you made a good faith effort to report your
income accurately.

If you choose to initiate a complaint about the 1099, you
can do so by calling IRS at (800) 829-1040 or visiting your
local walk-in office.

Prepare your return from your records. I prefer to put only
correct receipts on the return; others put the 1099 number
and then back out the excess.

Default Incorrect amount on 1099

I'm an independent contractor. A company I did business for
sent me a 1099 that states I made more than I really did. I
contacted them to investigate what they paid me and they
still insist their numbers are correct. I received a
handwritten paper with the amounts they said they paid me.
I received checks for work I did, but one line states I was
paid in cash, when I never did get cash, I was always paid
by check. Don't they have to prove they paid me by cash
with a receipt that I signed for? Should I just report what
I actually received?
