One of the conditions for deducting educational expenses is> the uniforms as a condition of my entrance into the program? that they NOY be part of the education for a new job or profession. If you were already employed as a Rad Tech technician, continuing education and expenses such as uniforms would be deductible. If you are a student, preparing to enter that profession, the expenses are NOT deductible. If that is the case, you may be able to deduct the full tuition and ALL related costs, cleaning of uniforms etc. (including transportation) There are times when, if you are able to itemize deductions, education expense gets more favorable results than education credits or adjustments to income. | Hello-- I'm a student in a Rad Tech program through a local hospital, and as part of my enrollment, I was required to purchase my clinical uniforms and footwear myself, separate from any tuition and book charges. I *had* to buy the uniforms from the vendor they directed--I wasn't allowed to go buy the cheapie hospital scrubs at Wal-Mart, for example, so I was required to buy the uniforms online directly from the vendor in California. I have the receipt for the uniforms. The cost of my clinical uniforms was nearly $200.00. It also cost me $28.00 for alterations so the pants and jacket fit properly. Additionally, my special all white *nursing-type* shoes cost me nearly $60.00. I know that since I didn't pay for these uniforms through the school directly, that strictly speaking, the uniforms aren't deductible as a school expense--but is there a chance this deduction would be OK, because I was required to have the uniforms as a condition of my entrance into the program? Thanks in advance, Jean in VA << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
