If they already each have an HSA, might as well put their
respective catch-up contribution into their respective
accounts, especially if you think the marriage won't last!
:-)

Per IRS Notice 2004-50, Q&A 32, "spouses who are both
eligible individuals may divide the annual HSA contribution
in any way they want, including allocating nothing to one
spouse."

I saw nothing in that notice, or in Notice 2004-2, that
treats the catch-up amounts any differently than regular
contributions. Also, since a surviving spouse can treat the
deceased spouse's HSA as his/her own, wouldn't that make the
point moot in the long run?

Just saw that yesterday. The total maximum, whether it be
2000 or other may be mutually pro rated. After all, isn't
that the secret of success in accounting? (Allocate, pro
rate and re create.)

Default Health Savings Account question

Hi, everyone,

I haven't found the answer to this question:

When both spouses are over age 50 and eligible for the
additional catch-up contribution to an HSA, does the couple
have to set up two HSAs, so that the spouse can put her own
catch-up contribution into hers, or, like regular
contributions, can they be divided as the spouses mutually
agree?
