While I wholeheartly understand your statements, I did
download from ftb.ca.gov revised forms which are capable of
being opened by an earlier version of Adobe, can be filled
in, and can be saved.

Either I'm speaking with a person at the CA FTB who is
either ignorant of the facts or is being fed a lot baloney
from another employee or I've been mistakenly calling my
brother-in-law in Sacramento who has been pulling my chain.

I have no further expectation that the CA FTB will ever do
anything about the ability to save filled-in forms.

The FTB now informs me that the update will take place
mid-afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 1.

I was informed by the CA FTB that the ability to save
filled-in FTB tax forms should be available by 1/25/05.

You might want to take a look at www.pdfill.com They have a
program for $10.00 that will allow you to save your PDF
files.

Version 7 READER also does not allow saving of the filled in
data. California FTB has set up their forms WITHOUT the
"rights" necessary to allow a user to save a filled in form
without having the full (i.e. costly) version of Adobe.

The IRS has chosen to provide their forms WITH the necessary
"rights". California FTB should hear people's displeasure.

The IRS forms work fine with version 6 - you can save your
filled in form. The CA FTB has chosen not to allow this, by
not providing the appropriate "rights".

The problem is not with FTB, but with Adobe. Version 6
doesn't have the save capability of earlier versions
(probably to try to get more people to upgrade).

I have not found such to be true. I downloaded a fresh copy
of the Adobe Reader AND a CA-540.pdf file from the FTB web
site on 1/1/2005 - and the filled-in information would not
save. It saves ONLY the blank form.

Apparently, one needs the FULL version of Acrobat to save
fill-in information.

It is not current. download a 2004 fill in form, and you
will see. We need to tell FTB NOT to take this ridiculous
step backward!

One thing I noticed about the 2004 CA FTB
forms/publications: nowhere can you get the 2004 CA tax
schedules. It's all tables up until the highest tax
bracket.

I had to find the schedules from a press release somewhere.

http://www.ftb.ca.gov/forms/help.html:

"If you are using Adobe Reader 6.0 you will be able to save
all information you entered on the fill-in forms." Perhaps
this is not current, but I just got it off the above link.

Default CA tax rorms from FTB

I am informed that teh California Franchise Tax Board may be
providing forms for 2004 and 2005 which CANNOT be saved once
filled in, unless you have a FULL and LATEST VERSION of
Adobe Acrobat. This is in contrast to prior years and with
current IRS practice of providing forms which can be filled
in and saved when using Adobe Acrobat READER, not the FULL
VERSION.

Please contact the FTB and express your displeasure.
