If you use a real newsreader (even what's built into> links" take precedence over the text of posters making the > whole thing realy not worth while to try to decipher. Netscape or Outlook Express), as opposed to Google, you won't have that problem. I agree the new Google groups are completely unreadable. The expiration of the increase in the AMT exemption amount.> people subject to AMT? (IIRC, the AMT exemption increase was extended to 2005 in one of this year's tax bills. It was originally scheduled to expire this year.) << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

One of the factors is the extent to which the personal> people subject to AMT? credits can offset the tax. For example, in TY 2004 the Child Care Tax Credit is allowed as a credit against both the regular and the alternative tax. For TY 2005 it will no longer be allowed as a credit against the AMT. This adverse change was originally scheduled to take place for TY 2004, but has recently been postponed for one year. If you can find the June 18 draft of the 2004 Form 2441 (try Pub 1155, p 8-11) you will note an unfavorable adjustment for AMT on line 11. This does not occur on the final version. -- Don EA in Upstate NY << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

| The January issue of Money magazine has a graph (p. 64) showing the number of taxpayers expected to pay AMT each year from 2004 to 2010. It shows a huge one-time jump in 2006, from about 4 million in 2005 to about 19 million in 2006. The yearly increases are much more gradual before and after that. What is going to happen in 2006 that will make so many more people subject to AMT? << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
