You Imply that you have not filed tax returns for the years
you were living abroad. If this is correct, you should be
aware that you do not avoid the requirement to file returns
and pay taxes simply because you are outside the U.S.

If you are a U.S citizen or permanent resident (implied by
your saying you "returned to the U.S.") you are still
subject to the Internal Revenue Code. Income earned abroad
may be eligible for an exclusion and taxes paid to a foreign
country may be eligible for a credit against U.S. taxes.
However, to claim either benefit, you must file a return.

No special exemption.

Depends on why you moved back. Moving expenses are allowed
only under certain circumstances.

Default 2004 residence only four months

After living abroad for six years, I have returned to the
U.S. I am currently applying for several jobs, but have not
yet returned to work. I have some questions:

1. I realize I will have to file a return because I recently
cashed in on some stocks, but am I entitled to any special
exemptions for having been in the country for less than five
months during 2005 (let alone for the past six years)?

2. Can I deduct my expenses for relocating to the U.S.?
$500 for my plane ticket plus $300 to ship boxes of
belongings.

Thanks for help.
